HCM CITY — The HCM City Traffic Safety Committee has launched a campaign to inspect self-modified three- and four-wheel motor vehicles in the city.

Speaking at a ceremony held to launch it on July 18, Colonel Trần Trung Hiếu, head of the city Road and Railway Traffic Police Division, said the city had seen an increase in the number of motor vehicles that do not meet technical standards and outdated and self-modified motorbikes.

The campaign aimed to reduce accidents involving self-modified three- and four-wheel motor vehicles, he said.

In the first six months of 2024 the traffic police found more than 23,000 substandard and three- and four-wheel non-motorised vehicles and 8,500 cases of violations.

Last year there were 17 road accidents involving three-wheel vehicles in the city in which six people died and 12 others were injured. In the first six months of this year there were two deaths and six injuries in similar accidents.

City authorities are also worried about encroachments on pavements and roads in front of industrial zones, companies and schools.

The traffic police are set to focus on reducing accidents and congestion, fighting crime and violations of environmental laws, ensuring traffic order and safety and strengthening management of urban order to reclaim the pavements for pedestrians. — VNS
