HCM CITY — Fourteen HCM City’s excellent teachers have been honoured for their creative approaches and effective support methods in education for students with disabilities.

The city’s Department of Education and Training on June 14 held a city-level competition seeking excellent teachers in education for students with disabilities in the 2022-23 school year.

Đỗ Minh Hoàng Đức, an expert from the department’s Primary Education Division, said the whole city has 33 specialised schools teaching students with disabilities, of which there are 21 public schools and 12 non-public schools.

The competition organisers have developed specific criteria to assess the teachers’ ability fairly and accurately.

There are many types of disabilities at various levels, so the learning ability of students with disabilities is not equal, requiring the teachers to have experience, appropriate knowledge and skills to meet the diverse needs of the students, he said.

“In the teaching process, teachers are required to have sensitivity, patience and empathy to recognise and understand the difficulties of the students,” he said.

Previously, sub-departments of education and training in Thủ Đức City and districts selected 34 outstanding teachers to take part in the city-level competition.

The city’s Department of Education and Training presented medals and certificates of merit to 14 selected excellent teachers.

The competition creates a healthy competitive environment to encourage the efforts of teachers to improve their teaching qualities, and seek and research effective teaching methods and techniques to improve skills in teaching students with disabilities.

It also brings opportunities for teachers to exchange experiences, contribute to building a network of exchanges and cooperation between schools, and create a favourable environment to meet the special needs of children with disabilities.

According to Nguyễn Bảo Quốc, deputy head of the city’s Department of Education and Training, the city has more than 6,350 children with disabilities, including more than 1,870 children studying at special schools and the rest studying at normal schools.

All schools in the city have promoted many positive and breakthrough educational models, contributing to creating a fair and diverse learning environment with the best learning quality, and improving the quality of care and education for all children. — VNS
