HÀ NỘI — The Việt Nam Red Cross Society (VNRC) will coordinate with the People's Committee of Cần Thơ City to launch Humanitarian Month 2023 at a ceremony in Cần Thơ City on April 23.

At the event, the VNRC will launch a movement called "Good people, good deeds - working together to build a compassionate community" with the aim of spreading kindness, promoting kind action, contributing to building a cultural lifestyle, and upholding humanitarian values in the community.

This year’s Humanitarian Month will run from May 1 to May 31.

Speaking at a press conference on April 19, VNRC president Bùi Thị Hòa said that the theme of this year’s humanitarian month, "From the heart of each of us - Working together to build a compassionate community", aimed to arouse the love of each person, calling on everyone to actively participate in charity and humanitarian activities, ready to help in difficult situations, multiply acts of kindness, and contribute to building a united, compassionate community.

“The purpose of Humanitarian Month 2023 activities is to widely strengthen humanitarian values among the people, gradually change the awareness of humanitarian work, and promote compassionate behaviour in the community. It also aims to advocate for mechanisms and policies for Red Cross activities and strengthen the leadership of the Party and State management over humanitarian work. It is also an opportunity to mobilise resources and build funds to support vulnerable groups in the community, contributing to building a compassionate community," said president Hòa.

During the month, the Red Cross Society at all levels strives to mobilise at least VNĐ400 billion (US$17 million) to support 100,000 households and benefit 1 million vulnerable people across the country. In particular, the Red Cross at all levels strives to mobilise resources to build and repair 63 kitchens at preschools and elementary schools with extremely difficult conditions with at least VNĐ150 million/kitchen. The society will also build and repair 115 Red Cross houses for poor fishermen and livelihood support for 200 poor fishing households.

Humanitarian Month was initiated by the Vietnam Red Cross Society in 2018. After five years of implementation, the programme has mobilised more than VNĐ2.05 trillion, helping more than 4.3 million needy people, mostly the poor and the disadvantaged. — VNS
