38 die in traffic accidents over three-day holiday

There were 64 traffic accidents in Việt Nam over the three-day New Year holiday, killing 38 people and injuring 35 others, said the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security.

HÀ NỘI — There were 64 traffic accidents in Việt Nam over the three-day New Year holiday, killing 38 people and injuring 35 others, said the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security.

Compared to the same period last year this is a decrease of three and two, respectively.

The accidents occurred on both road and railways. 

In order to keep public security and social order during the holiday, the traffic police at different levels discovered more than 19,200 people violated traffic laws and they were fined a collective total of VNĐ22.65 billion (US$994,600).

The police temporarily seized 91 automobiles, more than 2,100 motorbikes and withdrew more than 1,200 driving licenses of different kinds.

Four drivers were tested positive for drugs and 812 others had a high amount of alcohol in their blood.

The police also discovered 978 violators via camera systems and sent them an announcement for their violations.

On the waterways, the police in different localities detected 314 violators, who were punished with VNĐ296 million ($12,900) of fines.

No serious traffic jams were reported.

The police checked six trains with 44 carriages, four stations and 60 railway employees and did not find out any mistakes. — VNS
