BUDAPEST — General Secretary of the Communist Party of Việt Nam Central Committee Nguyễn Phú Trọng and his entourage arrived at Ferenc Lizt International Airport in Budapest on the afternoon of September 8, starting his official visit to Hungary at the invitation of Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
An official welcome ceremony for him and the delegation was held at the airport.
Việt Nam and Hungary established diplomatic relations on February 3, 1950.
Hungary provided Việt Nam with valuable support and assistance during the latter’s national defence and construction. Over the past years, bilateral relations have seen very positive developments, with the exchange of delegations, especially at the high level, taking place regularly through the channels of parties, administrations, national assemblies, and localities.
The two sides also have had effective cooperation at multilateral forums, particularly at the United Nations and within the framework of the Asia-Europe Economic Forum.
Hungary considers Việt Nam its most important partner in Southeast Asia.
The visit by the Party leader affirms Việt Nam’s view of Hungary as a traditional partner of top importance in central eastern Europe, strengthens the mutual understanding and trust between the two countries’ leaders and peoples, creates a new landmark and motive, and brings the Việt Nam-Hungary relations to a new height.
During his stay in Hungary from September 8-11, Party leader Trọng will hold talks and meetings with leaders of the host country, witness the signing of many cooperation documents between the two countries, meet representatives of the Hungary-Việt Nam Friendship Association, tour Szentendre city, deliver a speech at the second Việt Nam-Hungary conference of rectors of universities, visit the Vietnamese embassy and talk with representatives of the Vietnamese community in the country. — VNS
