Top APEC meet next week in Nha Trang

The Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) forum will hold its first event of 2017 with the Senior Officials Meeting (SOM1) to be held from February 18 to March 3 in the central coastal city of Nha Trang.

HÀ NỘI — The Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) forum will hold its first event of 2017 with the Senior Officials Meeting (SOM1) to be held from February 18 to March 3 in the central coastal city of Nha Trang.

The National Committee for APEC 2017 announced at a briefing yesterday that some 1,500 delegates from 21 member economies, international and regional organisations and businesses are expected to attend the SOM1.

The event will include 56 meetings, workshops and dialogues among 38 APEC committees and working groups across a wide range of topics, such as trade and investment liberalisation, business facilitation, natural disaster response, human resources development, education, business travel facilitation, ocean and fishing, e-commerce and services.

Delegates will discuss and reach agreements on priorities for the 2017 APEC Year on promoting sustainable, inclusive and innovative growth, regional economic connectivity, and the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises and micro-enterprises in the digital era.  Food security, sustainable agriculture and climate adaptation are also on the agenda of the meetings. 
Deputy Foreign Minister of Việt Nam Bùi Thanh Sơn, as Chairman of the APEC Senior Officials Meetings in 2017, will preside over SOM1. 

Việt Nam’s 13 ministries and agencies will preside over or assume chairmanship and vice chairmanship of committees and working groups. The Ministry of Industry and Trade will preside over the Budget and Management Committee and the APEC Automobile Dialogue; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will preside over the APEC Policy Support Unit; the Ministry of Finance will preside over the APEC Sub-Committee on Customs Procedures; the Ministry of Science and Technology will preside over the APEC Sub-Committee on Standards and Conformance, the APEC Policy Partnership on Science, Technology and Innovation; the Ministry of Planning and Investment will preside over the Human Resources Development Working Group; the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will preside over the APEC Policy Partnership on Food Security.

The APEC Finance Central Bank Deputies Meeting will also be held in Nha Trang City, presided over by the Ministry of Finance. — VNS
