HÀ NỘI — The majority of deputies at the 14th National Assembly have shown strong confidence in newly-elected NA Chairwoman Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân, who won the July 22 election with nearly 98 per cent of the vote.
Many deputies expressed their belief that with her practical experience gained through many work positions, the new Chairwoman, together with other NA leaders, will make positive changes to the NA’s legislation and supervision activities, as well as in deciding important matters of the country.

Chairwoman of the 13th National Assembly Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân was re-elected as the head of the 14th legislature during the body’s first session.
In a secret ballot held on Thursday, 483 out of 494 deputies, or 97.77 per cent, voted for Ngân. The result was announced yesterday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing first NA session, Ho Chi Minh City representative Trần Hoàng Ngân said the election result showed the high regard held for the top legislator.
He highlighted that voters had high hope that the NA would solve urgent problems in environmental management, food safety and traffic safety. "Voters nationwide expect sustainable economic growth, which goes along with a sustainable legal system," he said, underscoring that the law should be built to suit the reality of the country with long-term effectiveness.
Sustainable economic development should go along with ensuring people’s living standards and environmental protection, he stressed, noting that the massive environmental incident in four central coastal provinces caused by Taiwanese-funded Formosa Ha Tinh had drawn the attention of many voters.
He suggested that the NA Committee for Science, Technology and the Environment, as well as the NA Economic Committee, work harder to monitor environmental protection during the implementation of industrial projects, including that of Formosa.
Meanwhile, Mai Khanh, representative of the northern province of Ninh Bình, noted that the 14th NA was facing many challenges, including environmental pollution, which would require great efforts of both the NA’s leaders and deputies to make sure economic growth is closely followed by strict supervision of environmental issues.
At the same time, Nguyễn Đắc Vinh, a deputy from the central province of Nghệ An, said he hoped the 14th NA would continue focusing on the legal system, while putting in place policies to support business and production, thus boosting the country’s development.
Nguyễn Thị Quyên Thanh, a representative from the Mekong Delta province of Vĩnh Long, voiced her wish that the NA would pay more consideration to agricultural provinces as well as other matters such as the response to climate change, drought and salinity intrusion.
Deputies also elected four NA Vice Chairs - Phùng Quốc Hiển, Uông Chu Lưu, Tòng Thị Phóng and Đỗ Bá Tỵ - as well as members of the Standing Committee of the 14th NA yesterday.

Hà Ngọc Chiến, member of the Party Central Committee and member of the Standing Committee of the 14th NA, was introduced as a candidate for Chair of the 14th NA Nationalities Council.
Nguyễn Hạnh Phúc, Secretary General of the 13th NA, was nominated for the 14th NA General Secretary post.
Hồ Đức Phớc, who is State Auditor General, was introduced to continue holding the position for 2016-2021.
