HÀ NỘI — The Politburo convened a meeting in Hà Nội on Wednesday to deliberate on an investment policy for the North-South high-speed railway project, concluding that it is a highly important and necessary infrastructure work.

The project aims to meet the growing transportation demand, contributing to the optimal and sustainable restructuring of the transport market along the North-South corridor. It aligns with the Party’s policies and orientations for transportation infrastructure investment, as outlined in the national development strategy under the 13th National Party Congress’s Resolution and national planning schemes.

The high-speed railway is expected to foster regional and inter-regional connectivity, generate economic spillover effects and open up new economic development spaces. Additionally, it will help restructure urban areas and economic sectors, thereby enhancing the economy'ss competitiveness.

Moreover, the project is poised to drive the growth of railway and supporting industries, promoting sustainable, modern, and eco-friendly modes of transport. This will help reduce traffic accidents, mitigate environmental pollution and adapt to climate change while ensuring national defence-security.

Recognising the strategic importance of the project, the Politburo agreed to seek the Party Central Committee's approval of the investment policy before the Government presents it to the 15th National Assembly at its upcoming 8th session.

Currently, the Ministry of Transport is proposing to have a North-South high-speed rail with designed speed of 350km/h, which would transport both passengers and freight, whereas the current rail lines will just carry goods. — VNA/VNS
