HỘI AN — Choir team La Salle Chorale from the Philippines was awarded the top prize of the fifth International Choir Competition at Hội An Theatre on Saturday. The team, conducted by Serry Repique, was also awarded the prize in the folklore and the mixed choirs categories. The competition’s international jury also gave 29 gold and 18 silver diplomas to the contestants.
The June 7 to 11 event drew more than 1,000 artists in 32 teams from 10 countries.
In the female choirs category, difficulty Level I, the Malaysian Institute of Art’s Ladies Chorus took a gold prize, while La Fontana from Japan pocketed the female choirs, difficulty level II award.
The Korean Children’s Choir of HCM City, conducted by Trần Nhật Minh, won the gold prize in the children’s choirs category G1.
Raffles Chorale from Singapore took two gold prizes in sacred choir music and mixed youth choirs categories.
Singapore Chinese Girls’ School of Singapore under conductor Angela Goh won gold in the youth choirs of equal voices division. The Graduate Singers of Singapore won the chamber choirs of mixed voices category.
Participating teams also joined a street parade throughout the old quarter of Hội An city on Saturday.
Hội An, a UNESCO-recognised world heritage site was picked to host the choir event by the world’s leading organiser of international choir competitions and festivals, Interkultur. Since the success of the first event in 2011, the event has become an inherent part of international choir tours.
The fifth International Choir competition was part of the 6th Quảng Nam Heritage Festival, being held in Hội An, Mỹ Sơn Sanctuary and Tam Kỳ City from June 9 to 14. — VNS
