CÀ MAU — The southernmost province of Cà Mau is expected to build a solar power plant in order to boost its renewable energy sources.

The 50MW plant will cover nearly 64ha of Rạch Gốc Township, Ngọc Hiển District, Dân Trí online newspaper reported.

With total investment of over VNĐ1.1 trillion (US$47.8 million), the plant is scheduled to be completed in the second quarter of 2019.

It is expected to produce 73.904kWh of electricity per year, boosting the supply of electricity for Cà Mau Province in particular and the country in general.

The project’s investor is Long Hưng Trading and Service Ltd.

The provincial People’s Committee said it has just sent an official letter to the Ministry of Industry and Trade to approve this solar power project as part of the plan for power development in Cà Mau Province in the 2016-25 period.

In 2016, the province also built Khai Long wind power plant in Đất Mũi Commune.

The plant has total investment of VNĐ5.5 trillion ($239 million), incorporating 50 wind turbines with a combined capacity of 100MW.

The province has put into place a number of appropriate policies and mechanisms to encourage enterprises to invest in the renewable energy sector, Lâm Văn Bi, deputy chairman said at a recent conference on renewable energy development.

So far, 20 domestic and foreign investors have carried out surveys to seek investment opportunities in wind and solar power in Cà Mau but only three investors have been approved by the provincial People’s Committee to carry out their projects.

According to the approved plan, Cà Mau will generate up to 3,600MW of wind energy, 1,500MW of solar energy and over 60MW of biomass energy by 2030. — VNS
