HCM CITY — The HCM City Tax Department has said it will collect VNĐ53.3 biilion (US$2.35 million) of tax liability from Uber.

The tax department reported to the city’s people’s committee that Uber did not establish a legal entity or open a bank account in Việt Nam despite operating in the country since 2014.

Last year, the department fined Uber VNĐ66.68 billion. Uber then paid VNĐ13 billion. The rest of the debt was not cleared before Grab took over Uber.

Talking about the case, Tạp chí điện tử Tài chính (Online Financial Magazine) quoted a Grab representative as saying that the tax payment is the responsibility of Uber, not Grab.

Grab did not buy the Uber legal entity in Việt Nam, therefore Uber has to take the responsibility for tax duties, said the representative.

Talking with media recently, a representative of the tax department said that the agency is awaiting the two sides completed transfer procedures then will request the implementation of tax duties. — VNS
