HÀ NỘI — Saigon Beer Alcohol Beverage Corporation (SABECO), is deeply committed to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, striving to foster a thriving and sustainable community in Việt Nam.

As Tết (Lunar New Year) approached, while many businesses ramped up production, SABECO employees, alongside volunteers from the HCM Communist Youth Union (HCYU), were busy organising festive activities. They distributed over 10,400 gifts to fishermen, border guards, and coastal soldiers across 25 provinces, embodying the spirit of giving during this important season.

Nguyễn Thùy Linh, a worker from northern province of Hải Dương, expressed appreciation for SABECO's efforts, saying: "We trust in the Government's commitment to social security. SABECO and the HCYU’s support reassures us that we are not forgotten."

The "Tết to share a hopeful year" initiative ran from January 6 to February 5, engaging SABECO employees nationwide. With a budget of US$310,000, each gift included essential items and a cash envelope, along with festive games set up in select locations to enhance community joy as the New Year approached.

This initiative is part of the broader "Welcome the Dragon Year – Multiple Prosperity" campaign, launched under SABECO's Bia Saigon brand. It celebrates Việt Nam's rich Lunar New Year traditions, focusing on family values and communal unity.

“Our community initiatives reflect our commitment to Việt Nam. We aim to welcome the Year of the Dragon with positivity and a united spirit, fostering hope for a better year,” stated Lester Tan, CEO of SABECO.

In 2023, SABECO also provided support to workers with 8,000 gifts in the "Together we make Tết" programme. Over the past few years, the company has channeled more than $1.8 million to nearly 28,000 beneficiaries through various programs designed to ensure a joyful Lunar New Year for workers and those in need.

Empowering the youth

SABECO’s dedication extends beyond immediate relief efforts. The company actively supports youth development as part of its sustainable strategy, fostering young talent and promoting healthy lifestyles.

Collaborating with the HCYU, SABECO has launched initiatives that provide training in entrepreneurship and digital skills, helping over 500 rural youths start businesses and contribute to local economies. The Lương Đình Của Award, which SABECO backs, honors young entrepreneurs who excel in their fields, celebrating 42 young farmers for their achievements last year.

To promote sportsmanship and well-being, SABECO has also invested in upgrading community sports facilities. Since 2022, the company has established ten new sports playgrounds and organized youth football tournaments across multiple provinces.

Moreover, in support of Việt Nam’s National Green Growth Strategy, the "Lighting up the Countryside" project, a collaboration with the HCYU, has installed 34 kilometres of solar street lights in rural areas, enhancing safety and promoting environmental sustainability.

Sustainable production practices

SABECO’s commitment to sustainability is integral to its business model, which focuses on the pillars of country, culture, conservation, and consumption. The company emphasizes responsible consumption, environmental protection, and the promotion of Vietnamese culture.

Since 2018, SABECO has actively pursued green initiatives, collaborating with state and social organisations to implement community projects, including solar lighting installations.

In line with the Government’s push for green growth, SABECO has transitioned to using plant-based biomass fuels and has improved its wastewater treatment processes. Notably, the company reduced its water usage from five liters per liter of beer produced in 2018 to under three litres last year.

In 2023, SABECO expanded its rooftop solar power project, with 17 out of 26 production plants utilising renewable energy, saving 25 million kWh of electricity annually and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 18,000 tonnes each year. This initiative supports SABECO's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and aligns with national green growth strategies.

Looking ahead, SABECO remains dedicated to enhancing community well-being and advancing green growth initiatives, contributing significantly to national goals while bolstering its competitive edge in the industry. — VNS
