Students of Hoằng Trường Primary School in the central province of Thanh Hóa were excited to get a new swimming pool where they can splash and chase away the summer heat. Each parent had to donate VNĐ100,000 (US$4.4) for the pools construction.
But the children’s excitement didn’t last for long.
One month after the pool was put into use, the school decided to fill it in.
The school principal claimed that a storm caused a landslide, which hit the pool and ’broke’ it.
The VNĐ150million ($6,500) pool was then replaced with a playground.
It later emerged that a parent complained the swimming pool looked like a shrimp breeding pond. Its bottom was covered with canvas without any approved safety standards.
All in all, the donated money had been wasted.
