Defender Quế Ngọc Hải has agreed to play for Sông Lam Nghê An for two more years, signing a contract worth VNĐ5 billion (US$217,000).

Hải was named in the national men’s football team to compete against Chinese Taipei on March 24 and Iraq on March 29 in the World Cup’s qualifying round.

The 25-year-old Hải has just returned to football after serving a six-month ban.

He received the ban after a horrific sliding tackle in the V.League 1 match between Nghệ An and Đà Nẵng last September. Hải was only issued a yellow card for the reckless lunge, which was a potential leg-breaking challenge, on Đà Nẵng’s Trần Anh Khoa during the game but he was retrospectively punished for the incident. -- VNS
