VĨNH LONG — A dragon and lion dance competition in the southern province of Vĩnh Long has found its winners following two days of celebration that ended on Tuesday.

The first prize for the lion dance performance on the Meihuaquan (Meihuaquan in Chinese language literally means Plum Flower Fist, a common style of kungfu) went to the Hào Nhật team from District 1, Vĩnh Long City; the first prize for the dragon dance performance was presented to the Thiên Hậu Pagoda team, also from Vĩnh Long City; and the first prize for the lion dance performance was given to the Sơn Đại Môn team from Long Hồ District.

The competition is part of the annual activities to celebrate the upcoming new year that aims to encourage the sporting spirit and create a joyful atmosphere among locals ahead of the upcoming festive season.

The event is an opportunity for young members of the dragon and lion dance teams to meet and exchange experiences related to their performing techniques. It attracted the participation of 10 teams from Vĩnh Long Province, which competed in three categories.

Dragon and lion dance is a street folk art that has existed for centuries in Việt Nam. The images of the lion and the dragon are associated with luck, happiness and prosperity and are considered a good omen at the start of the new year.

Lion and dragon dance practice sessions and competitions have been taking place in Vĩnh Long Province for the past 20 years, following the establishment of several clubs that regularly enter competitions and perform at special occasions. — VNS
