HÀ NỘI — Niels Van Der Pijl powered to victory in the second stage of the third VTV International Cycling Tournament – Tôn Hoa Sen Cup yesterday.
Niels of Laos’ NEX CCN team left his rivals behind in the last 10km to triumph in the 149km stage from Hà Nội to Thanh Hóa with a time of 3:04.28 and with an average speed of 48.464kmh.
Im Jaeyeon of South Korea’s Korail and David Van Eerd of the Netherlands’ Global were the runners-up.
With this win, Niels won the yellow jersey for the best overall time of 4:08.22 after two stages, followed by David and Im.
David also took the green jersey as the best sprinter with 47 points. Im and Nguyễn Thành Tâm of Lộc Trời Group ranked second and third with 46 points and 36 points, respectively.
Niels’ effort helped his team, NEX CCN, top the team ranking with the best overall time of 12:26.50. The Philippines’ NSI and Netherlands’ Global were the runners-up.
Today, cyclists will begin their third stage from Thanh Hóa to Vinh City of Nghệ An Province, lasting 154 km.
The event attracted 80 cyclists from six domestic cycling teams and six from overseas clubs, competing over 14 stages covering 1,800km. They started from Hà Nội on September 2 and will finish in HCM City on September 16.
The event is co-organised by Việt Nam Television and the Việt Nam Cycling Federation to celebrate the 73rd anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2). — VNS
