VN players to compete at Thailand Masters

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s strongest male badminton players will compete at the Princess Sirivannavari Thailand Masters which is scheduled for January 9-14 in Bangkok.

In the singles event, Nguyễn Tiến Minh, the former world No 5, is the only Vietnamese starting from the first main round. He will play Jason Anthony Ho-Shue of Canada in the first match.

His teammates Phạm Cao Cường and Lê Đức Phát have to vie for their slots from the qualification round. Cường is No 1 seed at the qualifier while Phát is seeded No 16.

In the doubles event, Bảo Minh and Dương Bảo Đức will play against Chan Tsz Kit and Chung Yonny of Hong Kong in their first main round.

The Masters also includes women’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles events. A total prize fund of US$150,000 is up for grabs.

The Thai competition is the first tournament of the year for the Vietnamese players, who will then participate in the Asian team badminton championship next month in Malaysia. — VNS
