‘Golden Whistle’ Trí retires after 23 years

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s No 1 referee, Võ Minh Trí, announced his retirement after the 2017 V.League 1 ended.

Trí, 45, has been refereeing for 23 years.

Trí, from Long An Province, started working on the pitch in 1994. Three years later, he refereed for the national premier league for the first time.

Trí was recognised as a FIFA-certified referee 17 years ago. He officiated at the FIFA World Cup qualifications for 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018, the Asian Games in 2010 and 2014, the Southeast Asian Games in 2003, 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2017 as well as in the Olympic qualifying round and AFF Cup.

He was awarded the Golden Whistle as the best referee in 2010, 2015 and 2017 by the Việt Nam Football Federation.

After retirement, Trí will be a referee supervisor at football events around the country. — VNS
