HÀ NỘI — Lý Hoàng Nam struggled to win his first round match at the Việt Nam Men’s Futures F9 tennis tournament yesterday in Bình Dương Province.

Nam, who is seeded No 4 at the tournament, needed two and a half hours to beat Belgian Victor Poncelet 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in the singles event.

Nam will next play teammate wildcard holder Trịnh Linh Giang who beat South Korean Moon Ju-hea 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.

Nam on Monday reached his best world ranking at No 629, according to the ATP’s release.

He jumps seven steps up compared to his previous position thanks to his quarter-final berth at the F7 event two weeks ago and a win at the F8 last week.

In other matches yesterday, Noh Sang-woo of South Korea won 6-0, 6-1 over host Trần Văn Hòa; Chinese Taipei Hung Jui-chen beat Nguyễn Văn Phương of Việt Nam 6-1, 6-0; No 1 Ti Chen of Chinese Taipei, who pairs with Nam in the doubles event, advanced after winning 7-5, 6-0 over Poland’s Karol Dzreweicki. — VNS
