HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese women suffered their first defeat at the Chess Olympiad yesterday in Baku, Azerbaizan.
Việt Nam lost 1-3 to Poland, with only Women’s Grandmaster Hoàng Thị Bảo Trâm winning against Zawadzka Jolanta.
After six matches, Việt Nam have eight points and rank 24 out of 140 teams.
They will next play Turkey, who are ranked in 25th place after losing 0.5-3.5 to the United States.
On the men’s side, the Vietnamese defeated South Africa 3-1.
GM Lê Quang Liêm and FIDE master Nguyễn Anh Khôi pocketed victories, while GMs Nguyễn Ngọc Trường Sơn and Nguyễn Huỳnh Minh Huy tied with their opponents.
With their fourth win, Việt Nam have jumped to the 37th position among 150 participating squads.
They will play Bosnia & Herzegovina, ranked No 39, in the next round. — VNS
