HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam had an outstanding start at the ASEAN Football Federation Women’s Championship with a 14-0 win over Singapore yesterday in Myanmar.
Just 10 minutes from the beginning, it was 3-0 for the former champions, and before the two teams enjoyed the break it was raised to 6-0. The second half was disturbed by heavy rain, but the wet ground did not stop Vietnamese players from adding eight more goals to take the best ever result over their rivals.
Nguyễn Thị Tuyết Dung and Nguyễn Thị Muôn scored four goals each. Nguyễn Thị Xuyến and Nguyễn Thị Liễu each earned a double, while the rest of the goals went to Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet, Vu Thi Nhung and Pham Hai Yen.
In the past, Viet Nam beat Singapore 9-1 in 2011 and 10-0 one year later. In an earlier group A match, defending champions Thailand defeated the Philippines 4-0.
After the first round match, Viet Nam are on top of the ranking. They will next play the Philippines on July 28. Thailand, who are in the second position, will face Singapore.
The Group B actions will be organised today. East Timor will play the host while Malaysia will face the Australian U20 team. — VNS
