Việt Nam jumped two steps to No 144 in the FIFA world rankings in April.
The team beat Taipei 4-1 on home turf and lost 0-1 to Iraq on away ground in the 2018 FIFA World Cup/2019 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers in March.
The result brought the team 228 points and lifted them up in the worlds, as well as in Asia, where they are ranked 23rd.
In ASEAN, Việt Nam are No 3, after the Philippines, world No. 116, and Thailand, world No 119.
In Asia Iran remained the top team, as they moved into the 42nd spot.
Last month’s victories over India and Oman were enough to see them improve in their ranking by two places, while Australia – following comprehensive wins over Tajikistan and Jordan – climbed 17 spots to 50th.
The Socceroos, who were the biggest movers in the top 50, are now ranked second in the continental.
South Korea are at third, as they are world No 56.
The 2014 FIFA World Cup runners-up Argentina are the new team at the top of the world. Their recent performances in World Cup qualifying rounds have helped them end Belgium’s five-month reign.
Close behind, Chile move into third (up two places), Colombia fourth (up four) and Uruguay to ninth (up two) to strengthen the South American grip on the top 10. -- VNS
