Hòang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) defeated Viettel 2-1 in the first round of the National Cup at Pleiku Stadium, Gia Lai Province, on Saturday.
Bùi Quang Thanh opened the scoring for the visitors in the second minute. However, 20 minutes later, Nguyễn Phong Hồng Duy equalized for the hosts.
After the break, Dương Văn Pho scored to give HAGL a 2-1 lead in the 48th minute.
Both sides used young players who trained at their own training centres in this match.
In other fixtures, Bình Phước lost to Quảng Ninh Coal 0-2, Cà Mau beat Đắk Lak 1-0, and Sông Lam Nghệ An edged Sanna Khánh Hòa BVN 1-0. While Nam Định beat Phú Yên 2-0 and FLC Thanh Hóa drew with HCM City 2-2.
This year’s competition, which features 24 teams including V.League 1’s 14 teams and National First Division’s 10 teams, will run until September 29.
The winner will walk away with prize of VNĐ1 billion (US$43,500). – VNS
