ĐÀ NẴNG -- Curtains came down on the 13th ASEAN Schools Games with many new records set and students showed their sporty talents in the white sandy beach of Đà Nẵng City on June 7.

The closing ceremony treated the audiences and athletes to colourful artistic performances, with 10 delegations participating in a parade to honour their achievements.

Vietnamese competitors proved their strength in most of six sports to top the medal tally with 44 golds, 31 silvers and 17 bronzes.

Indonesia came second with 22 golds, 22 silvers and 20 bronzes, followed by Thailand which won 18 golds, 17 silvers and 23 bronzes.

Seven other delegations also secured medals in this second time that the ASG was held in Việt Nam.

The games with the theme of 'Connect to shine bright' saw nine records broken, all in swimming and achieved by Vietnamese students.

Speaking at the closing ceremony at the Tiên Sơn Sports Complex, Việt Nam Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyễn Thị Kim Chi emphasised the importance of the ASG in promoting the spirit of solidarity and friendship among regional students through sports.

“The ASG has given us an opportunity to connect, build and create new friendships. We have witnessed the tireless spirit and efforts of our student-athletes," said Chi, head of the organising committee.

"It is the junior athletes who inspire people by overcoming their limits to achieve great results. Through sports, we can overcome differences and boundaries, and unite to build a strong and cohesive Southeast Asian community."
