HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam has recorded its 38th fatality linked to COVID-19, a 64-year-old woman suffering from liver cancer who was being treated at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hà Nội.

The sub-treatment committee of the National Steering Committee on COVID-19 Prevention and Control announced the death on Thursday morning.

The woman had been suffering from chronic hepatitis B for 10 years and was diagnosed with liver cancer four months ago.

She was taken to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases for treatment on May 4 with a diagnosis of sepsis/liver cancer, chronic hepatitis B and hemophagocytic syndrome.

She tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 on May 8.

Despite intensive care and medical consultations from leading professors, due to serious underlying diseases, she passed away on Wednesday.

The cause of death was reportedly septic shock with a background of liver cancer, chronic hepatitis B, hemophagocytic syndrome, leukopenia and SARS-COV-2.

Three COVID-19 related deaths have been recorded since the pandemic's resurgence in late April. — VNS
