NGHỆ AN — A pregnant woman in the central province of Nghệ An has been saved from a critical condition thanks to last-minute blood donations by three nurses from Nghệ An General Hospital.
The 18-year-old woman, from Châu Nga Commune, Quỳ Châu District in the province, was taken to hospital last Wednesday with shock due to losing blood and her 25-week-old foetus died in the womb. If she had not received a blood transfusion and emergency aid, she could have died.
The pregnant woman was blood type A and the hospital did not have this in store.
Three nurses from the hospital including Ngô Thị Thu Khoa, Đậu Thị Thanh Huệ and Nguyễn Thị Sương volunteered to donate three units of blood.
By Saturday, the woman was in a stable condition.
The same day witnessed more than 2,000 young people, workers and soldiers joined a blood donation campaign in the province's Vinh City.
They donated more than 1,200 units of blood.
Last year, medical facilities in the province received more than 32,700 units of blood donated, and another 15,600 units of blood in the first half of this year.
Each unit of blood equals 250ml of blood for women, and 350ml of blood for men, according to the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion. — VNS
