HCM CITY — Thirty per cent of the total of 240 traffic accidents recorded in the first four months of the year in HCM City occurred in Bình Tân and Bình Chánh districts.
Nguyễn Thanh Phong, chairman of HCM City People’s Committee, who is also head of the Traffic Safety Board, met recently with leaders of Bình Tân and Bình Chánh districts to discuss traffic safety.
Trần Phú Lữ, Chairman of Bình Chánh District, said the district had 51 traffic accidents, causing 52 deaths and four injuries in the first four months of the year.
Bình Tân District had 24 deaths and one injury from 23 traffic accidents.
Most of the traffic accidents are caused by poor awareness and lack of adherence to traffic rules, unfinished transport projects, and roads that are in disrepair and need upgrading.
To reduce the number of accidents, Bình Chánh District will strictly fine traffic violators and complete transport projects in an effort to reduce traffic congestion.
In addition, the district has asked the city Department of Transport to upgrade 1A Highway-Hưng Nhơn intersection, and install more traffic lights and a pedestrian overpass.
Bình Tân District will upgrade An Dương Vương-Bình Long-Phan Anh-Hương Lộ 3 streets in the form of a Build-Transfer investment project.
Phong also asked related units to raise public awareness about the high number of traffic accidents.
This year, Bình Tân District seeks to reduce the number of traffic accidents to under 5 per cent of the total in the city, and Bình Chánh District aims to reduce the number of deaths caused by traffic accidents to under 100. — VNS
