HÀ NỘI — Some traffic policemen in Hà Nội were suspended from work after they were caught taking money from violators, said Đào Vĩnh Thắng, head of Hà Nội’s Traffic Police Division on Tuesday.
A video footage recorded by reporters of Tiền Phong (Vanguard) newspaper at some police stations on Tuesday was widely circulated among online newspapers and in social media.
The footage showed traffic offenders giving VNĐ100,000-200,000 (US$4.4-8.8) in cash to some of the policemen, while some offenders placed the money in the work documents of the policemen.
The policemen were seen not returning the money and letting the offenders go without booking them for their offence.
According to Tiền Phong newspaper, these activities were recorded at three police stations. One was near Đuống Bridge in Gia Lâm District, while the other two were at the Thái Hà-Hoàng Cầu intersection in Đống Đa District and Nguyễn Phong Sắc-Trần Quốc Hoàn intersection in Cầu Giấy District.
Speaking to the newspaper, Thắng said the policemen shown in the video had been temporarily suspended from work.
“We have formed working groups to investigate and clarify the reported information,” he said, adding the situation had been reported to leaders of the Hà Nội Police Department.
Nguyễn Đức Chung, chairman of the Hà Nội People’s Committee, on Tuesday assigned the director of the Hà Nội Police Department to conduct a thorough investigation into the case, take strict action against the errant policemen, if found guilty, and report to the committee and inform the media before March 20. — VNS
