GIA LAI — A loud explosion rocked the headquarters of the People's Committee of Ia Pnôn Commune in Đức Cơ District, the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai on Tuesday, killing a militia member.

The victim, identified as 18-year-old S.K., was part of a group cleaning a garden behind the building. Four people were involved in the group activity but only S.K. remained in the area when the blast occurred.

The authorities suspect an unexploded ordnance from the war was accidentally detonated during the cleanup, leading to the death.

On the same day, another explosion levelled a house in Tam Hợp Commune, Quỳ Hợp District, the central province of Nghệ An.

The blast killed the homeowners -- H.V.Q, 53, and H.T.H, 49 -- and scattered debris dozens of metres away.

The causes of the explosions are under investigation. — VNS
