HÀ NỘI — Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam) has identified digital transformation as one of the ten strategic solutions for the development strategy by 2030 with a vision towards 2045, helping the business enhance operational efficiency, competitiveness, leadership position in its field and contributing to building a digital and green economy.

In 2020, Petrovietnam established the Digital Transformation Steering Committee led by the group's CEO to comprehensively oversee the digital transformation efforts of the group and its subsidiary units.

Petrovietnam has formulated a digital vision and roadmap for the parent company, comprising 32 digital initiatives under four implementation programmes in the period of 2022-2026, aiming for advanced digital maturity by 2026. Resolution 184-NQ/ĐU was issued to guide digital transformation across Petrovietnam's enterprises and units by 2025, with a vision toward 2030.

The group has implemented the establishment of specialised databases related to its five core operational domains, with the E&P database serving as the foundation. Platforms for applications have been developed to enhance the management and operation of the group. Investments and upgrades in information technology infrastructure and security solutions have been deployed to meet the demands of digital transformation.

Through relentless efforts, Petrovietnam has successfully applied and implemented an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system for resource management and optimisation. As of July 19, 2023, the project has reached 76 per cent completion.

Petrovietnam's CEO Lê Mạnh Hùng said timely and stable ERP system implementation would positively contribute to achieving Petrovietnam's management goals. The group was determined to operationalise all modules by this December.

In addition to the parent company, Petrovietnam's subsidiary units are actively undertaking and expediting digital transformation processes to optimise production and business operations, enhance customer experiences, and boost competitiveness.

Russia-Việt Nam Joint Venture (Vietsovpetro), for example, has implemented ERP systems and the SVODKA VSP operational monitoring centre. This enables real-time data collection and transmission from offshore facilities to the shore, enhancing oil exploration and extraction efficiency, as well as optimising management and reducing operational costs.

Notably, PetroVietnam Power Corporation (PV Power) has equipped itself with an online monitoring centre for PV Power's power plants and an electronic operation logbook system. This helps enhancing machinery performance, fuel efficiency, and ensure security control and environmental protection measures.

Ca Mau Petroleum Fertilizer Joint Stock Company (PVCFC) has successfully implemented an ERP system, an Enterprise Production Management System (EPMS), along with several applications such as 2Nông, CRM-omni, Anh Hai Ca Mau, which have significantly improved customer care, enhanced customer experience, and boosted the company’s competitive capacity in the market

Challenges ahead

Despite the tangible results, Petrovietnam still faces various challenges that need to be overcome.

For example, regulations regarding the State's classified list in the oil and gas sector are currently a barrier to implementing cloud applications. Additionally, Petrovietnam is experiencing a shortage of in-house personnel with the necessary digital skills. The magnitude of the digital transformation workload is substantial, and there are difficulties in integrating various digital technology solutions.

To overcome these challenges, the group has placed a strong emphasis on communication efforts and provided foundational digital transformation training for all employees and workers.

Petrovietnam has organised 12 digital transformation training courses for 576 officials. It has also introduced the publication "Petrovietnam Digital Transformation" to provide essential knowledge about the direction, roadmap, and digital transformation plans for all employees.

In 2023, with the goal of accelerating digital transformation, Chairman of Petrovietnam's Board of Directors Hoàng Quốc Vượng has directed the incorporation of a digital culture into the Corporate Culture Renewal Project for Petrovietnam, creating a foundation for promoting digital transformation throughout the group.

Furthermore, Petrovietnam will focus on optimising its internal capabilities and organisational structure to drive digital transformation. This includes comprehensive digital transformation training for all staff members, strengthening the organisation of conferences and workshops to share experiences in digital transformation and updates on new technologies.

The group will collaborate with experienced domestic and international partners in digital transformation, such as signing cooperation agreements with Viettel and Microsoft.

Additionally, it aims to enhance learning and exchange experiences in digital transformation with relevant government agencies.

PetroVietnam CEO Hùng said digital transformation was closely tied to leadership.

“Leaders must take the lead in embracing digital transformation, thereby formulating integrated solutions together with digital technology to comprehensively and fundamentally change the business methods, approaches, and models," he said. — VNS
