HÀ NỘI — The Mekong Delta province of Bạc Liêu should focus on its “spearheads” and review the building of new-style rural areas to make it more people-oriented and develop well, Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a working session in Hà Nội with key leaders of the province, PM Phúc also stressed the province needs to develop quality rice strains and develop the agriculture model of the combination of intensive cultivation of rice and shrimp, which is its comparative advantage.

For major projects in the locality, the leader ordered local authorities to quickly implement them and develop industrial zones so as to accelerate the shift of its economic structure, with attention paid to the protection of the environment.

Regarding local and regional infrastructure projects, he asked the Ministry of Transport to announce the zoning for the development of roads, railways, and waterways, as well as to prioritise important ones. The socialisation of the resources, especially private investment, must be put into consideration, the leader stressed.

Besides, advantages in tourism must also be utilised to contribute to the development of the locality, Phúc added.

Also at the session, he gave his ideas on proposals by the province and asked ministries to help Bạc Liêu untangle the knots for local socio-economic development in the future.

Bạc Liêu's leading officials asked for the PM’s support to build and realise a project on the inter-subregion economic development on the Cà Mau peninsular sub-region. They called for the implementation of projects on building key roads that can help accelerate regional connectivity.

Officials also asked for support for clean energy projects in the province which are expected to turn Bạc Liêu into one of the country’s centres in this field. — VNS
