HÀ NỘI — Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc urged utmost efforts and effective coordination among Government agencies to ensure the successful hosting of the second summit between the Democractic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the US.
The high-profile meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump in the capital city of Hà Nội is an important event that has grabbed global attention, PM Phúc said.
“Following our successful organisation of international level events such as the Leaders’ Summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in 2017 and the World Economic Forum on ASEAN in 2018, the fact that Việt Nam was chosen as the venue to host the second DPRK-US summit serves as another testament to Việt Nam’s increasingly elevated global standing, as well as showcases the country’s active role and recognises its contributions to global issues,” the Vietnamese Government leader said.
Ensuring security and safety for the summit is the highest priority, PM Phúc said, adding that Hà Nội should maintain a presentable image of the capital city.
He also asked for the most favourable conditions to facilitate the reporting of foreign media delegations coming to Việt Nam.
Preparations must be swift but meticulous and considerate, so as international friends arriving in Việt Nam would not only feel the hospitality of the Vietnamese, he said, adding that it’s also important that the Vietnamese people would be informed of the significance of the meeting and through it, the role and reputation of Việt Nam in the international community.
PM Phúc stressed the high-profile summit is a “valuable opportunity” for Việt Nam to broadcast its image and accomplishments in various fields, promote the country’s investment climate and tourist attractions, facilitate trade and further international integration.
For Hà Nội, the second DPRK-US summit takes place as the city marks two decades since it was recognised as “City for peace” by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organistation (UNESCO), the first city in the Asia-Pacific region to have earned the title. PM Phúc urged Hà Nội to take advantage of this opportunity to promote its image as a peace-loving, friendly city of rich history and cultural heritage, but also full of potential for development co-operation.
Earlier, Hà Nội’s police chief, Lieutenant General Đoàn Duy Khương has announced stringent security measures for the days before and during the summit, including around-the-clock watch of important sites across the city, including the Nội Bài International Airport Nội Bài, train and coach stations, and deployment of 96 patrol teams to guard and suppress criminal activities from 11pm to 5am.
Lt Gen Khương also asked for professional forces from the Ministry of Public Security to support Hà Nội’s police. — VNS
