HÀ NỘI — President Trần Đại Quang asked the Supreme People’s Court to seriously deal with major criminal cases, especially those regarding economic activities and corruption, during a teleconference held in Hà Nội yesterday.
In his speech, he requested the sector improve quality and speed up the settlement of cases, avoid unjust judgments and work so criminals are brought to justice.
The President suggested that the Supreme People’s Court should build its image of being friendly and helpful to people; protecting justice, human and citizen rights, socialism, State interests, and the legitimate rights and interests of individuals and organisations.
On the occasion, the State leader praised the court sector for working closely with agencies concerned to thoroughly and cautiously consider cases that went on trial years ago and defendants proclaimed their innocence, some of them justified, thus ensuring legitimate rights and interests of citizens.
The court reported that a number of cases were prosecuted promptly and strictly last year.
From October 1, 2016 – September 30, 2017, courts nationwide dealt with 438,625 cases, equivalent to 89.3 percent of the total. The number of cases being handled and already handled rose by 8.3 percent and 6.1 percent, respectively. The number of cancelled and revised verdicts accounted for 1.3 percent, meeting the National Assembly’s requirement.
Progress was also seen in the settlement of civil and administrative cases. Up to 53.3 percent of civil cases were mediated successfully.— VNS
