A Christmas Day walk

The Friends of Vietnam Heritage will host a morning walk on Christmas Day to discover Nguyễn Công Trứ Street and surrounding area.

HÀ NỘI — The Friends of Vietnam Heritage will host a morning walk on Christmas Day to discover Nguyễn Công Trứ Street and surrounding area.

The walk will starts outside the house number 5D Hàm Long Street, where the first Communist Party cell of Hà Nội was established, then along Lò Đúc Street to the Pasteur Garden, and outside the National Institute of Hygiene & Epidemiology (originally the Pasteur Institute), before coming back to Lò Đúc and to Nguyễn Công Trứ Street.

The walk will feautre some of the buildings from the French era, which have been pulled down to make way for various developments. Carry on to Hai Bà Trưng Lake and the next door temple complex where the group will learn about the Hai Bà Trưng sisters’ contribution to Vietnamese history.

For the final part of the walk, the group will meander the lanes of Chợ Giời, one of Hà Nội’s huge and intriguing city markets specialised in one type of goods. The walk will end where the market meets Huế Street.

This eclectic walk touches on several influences that shaped Ha Noi, from the Communist Party to a market where you can find every possible type of tool and spare car parts.
