PHÚ YÊN — A formation of rock layers, similar to the national heritage site Ghềnh Đá Đĩa (The Cliff of Stone Plates), has been discovered at Xuân Dục Hamlet in the central coastal province of Phú Yên.

The newly-exposed formation includes natural stones with vertical cracks due to the influence of nature over the years.

The stones are made up of layers of hexagonal, square, and circular columns which overlap each other like giant plates. Its structure is similar to Ghềnh Đá Đĩa, a national landscape site in An Ninh Đông Commune.

The formation is located within the stone-pit that has been licensed for exploitation by two local companies and found by the workers while controlling the excavators.

Receiving the information from the workers, Phú Yên Province’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has conducted a survey of the area.

Initial results reveals the new rock formation might be larger than they can see as two spots which are located one kilometre apart have similar structure. The department has submitted report to the provincial People’s Committee to ask for a halt of stone exploitation in the area and invite specialists to come up with appropriate preservation methods.

According to Phan Đình Phùng, the vice chairman of Phú Yên Province’ People’s Committee, the province will immediately set up a team to conduct a general evaluation of the area in order to preserve and promote the values of the natural resource.

Gành Đá Đĩa was recognised as a national landscape site in 1998 and has become a top tourist draw in Phú Yên. — VNS
