HCM CITY — Songs and colourful images were the highlight when HCM City’s leading puppet troupe, Nụ Cười (Smile), debuted Aladdin Và Cây Đèn Thần (Aladdin and Magic Lamp) this week.

Both adults and kids were captivated at the opening show at the Nón Lá (Conical Hat) Theatre last Sunday, screaming and laughing as some beautiful puppets were manipulated by skilled performers.

Directed by Vũ Minh, the play is based on the popular Arabian Nights.

It features Aladdin and his magical adventures. Despite the challenges that befall him, Aladdin continues to believe in love and helps others.

"We spent more than VNĐ300 million (over US$14,000) on making the play,” Huỳnh Anh Tuấn, owner and art director of the Nụ Cười Troupe, said.

Costume designers and specialists in sound and light have added razzle-dazzle to the play through beautiful clothes, accessories and interior designs.

The play is already so popular that there are long lines at the box office.

Tuấn complained that in the city there are few puppet shows for younger audiences, particularly children.

The pioneer, who is making waves, said he wants to inject life into shows by adding attractive elements.

“Through our shows, children can learn about Vietnamese puppetry and enhance their love for the art as well as learn useful lessons about people and life.”

Aladdin Và Cây Đèn Thần can be seen at 7pm every Saturday and Sunday at Nón Lá Theatre, 55B Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai Street, District 1. Tickets for children include a meal. It runs through August 30.—VNS
