VĨNH PHÚC — A roughly 600-year-old tree at the temple of General Trần Nguyên Hãn in Sơn Đông Commune of Lập Thạch District in northern Vĩnh Phúc Province has been granted heritage status. Certified by the Việt Nam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment (VACNE), the lộc vừng tree, scientifically named Barringtonia acutangula Gaertn, is some 10m tall and has a leaf canopy of nearly 20m.
Located in Lập Thạch District by the temple dedicated to General Trần Nguyên Hãn, who greatly contributed to the victory in the Lam Sơn uprising against the Ming invaders in 1427. After he died, locals people built the temple and planted the lộc vừng tree to honour him. — VNS
