HÀ NỘI – Thanh Tùng, who composed many love songs, died yesterday in Hà Nội after eight years of illness.

Tùng was a leading composer of Vietnamese music. His songs won people’s hearts.

Born in 1948 in the coastal province of Khánh Hòa, Tùng moved to Hà Nội at the age of six.

He graduated from North Korea’s Pyongyang Conservatory in 1971 and worked for Voice of Việt Nam from 1971 to 1975. After the reunification of the country in 1975, he returned to HCM City, and contributed to the establishment of HCM City Television’s orchestra. He also worked as conductor and art manager of the Bông Sen (Lotus) troupe.

Tùng had an attack in 2008, leading to hemiplegia. Living with the illness, he continued to be in good spirits. He continued to attend concerts that featured his songs, even though he could only smile but not speak.

Diva Mỹ Linh said she loved singing Tùng’s songs because they expressed the composer’s positive view of life. His beloved songs include Hát Với Chú Ve Con (Singing with the Little Cicada), Một Mình (Lonely), Lời Tỏ Tình Của Mùa Xuân (Spring’s Avowal of Love) and Lối Cũ Ta Về (Returning to the Old Path).
