Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc on Tuesday approved the Việt Nam Railway Corporation (VNR)’s plan to close illegal level crossings in crowded residential areas by the end of this year.
Deputy Prime Minister Trương Hòa Bình on Thursday urged relevant agencies to take drastic measures to tackle pending traffic problems.
The number of traffic accidents, traffic-related deaths and injuries in Việt Nam dropped in the first half of the year compared to the same period last year.
Railway authorities said they would need at least VNĐ1.7 trillion (US$74.97 million) in 2017-2020 to address long-standing rail accident hotspots at illegal level crossings.
Every level crossing in the country will be inspected to ensure railway traffic safety and minimise accidents involving trains under a directive issued by Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc.
