HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese top tennis player Lý Hoàng Nam earned a place in the men’s singles quarter-finals the Futures Việt Nam F1 tennis tournament in Huế yesterday.
Nam, No 1 seed and world No 461, defeated Kelsey Stevenson of Canada, world No 1,087 with the score of 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in the second round.
Nam, who has the highest ranking athlete among 68 participants from 21 countries and territories taking part in the event, will meet Nishiwaki Kazuki of Japan, world No 998 who beat Aaron Addison of Australia, world No 1,275, in the quarter-final match.
Meanwhile, young talent Nguyễn Văn Phương, 17, was was beaten in the second round by No 8 seed Takashi Saito of Japan 1-6, 4-6.
In the men’s doubles category, Nam and Lê Quốc Khánh also beat Japanese No 2 seeds Yuichi Ito and Jumpei Yamasaki 4-6, 6-2, 10-2 (super tie break) to reach the quarter-finals. — VNS
