Wrestler Lụa suffers first round loss in Olympics

HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Thị Lụa was eliminated from the Rio Olympic Games yesterday in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Lụa was defeated 0-5 by Senegalese Isabelle Sambou in the women’s 53kg wrestling category at the Carioca Arena 2.

The 25-year-old was the last Vietnamese athlete left at the Olympics.

Lụa received a wild card to enter the main round in the event which saw 19 competitors.

She was a unique wrestler from Việt Nam who competed in two Olympics in a row in two different weight classes.

At the London Games four years ago, Lụa took part in the 48kg pool and was disqualified in the first round.

Việt Nam had their most successful Games with one gold and one silver by marksman Hoàng Xuân Vinh.

After 13 days of competitions, Việt Nam rank 45.

The US topped the medal tally with 30 gold, 32 silver and 31 bronze medals. Great Britain came second and China was ere third.

The Rio Games will close on August 21. — VNS
