YÊN BÁI — Three members of a family in Trạm Tấu District, the northern mountainous province of Yên Bái, were killed by lightning on Sunday, according to local authorities.
The victims are 57-year-old Mùa Thị Sông, 25-year-old Thào Thị Vi – Sông’s daughter-in-law and 4-month-old Lý A Suối – Vi’s son.
At 3pm on Sunday, Sông and Vi were working on a paddy field and using an umbrella to cover three of them from the heavy rains when they were struck, according to Nguyễn Thành Hưng, head of the district department of agriculture and rural development.
Local authorities provide support for the family with the burial in line with local traditions and gave them VNĐ30 million (US$1,849), Vietnam News Agency reported.
Previously, on August 9, in the rural commune of Phú Linh, Vị Xuyên District of the northern province Hà Giang, two sisters were also dead as they took cover in a hut during a thunderstorm. The same day, in Mèo Vạc District, a three-year-old H'Mông child also fell victim to lightning while his grandmother and his younger sister sustained serious injuries. — VNS
