HCM CITY — The annual five-day 14th Summer Camp for young overseas Vietnamese, which kicked off on Monday in HCM City, has attracted about 60 Vietnamese aged 12-25 from countries and territories worldwide.

The camp, with the theme “Proud of Homeland Sea and Islands”, was organised by the HCM City Committee for overseas Vietnamese in collaboration with the HCM City unit of the Hồ Chí Minh Communist Youth Union.

Võ Thành Chất, deputy chairman of the committee, and head of the campaign this year, said the camp offered an opportunity for young overseas Vietnamese to connect with local youth.

A wide range of activities are being held through HCM City and southwestern provinces during the camp.

Participants will visit the Trúc Mai Home Concert of Meritorious Artist couple Đinh Linh and Tuyết Mai in HCM City, and learn about traditional Vietnamese musical instruments like the đàn bầu (monochord), đàn tranh (16-string zither) and sáo trúc (bamboo flute).

They will also visit popular tourism attractions on Phú Quốc Island and Hà Tiên District in the Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta province of Kiên Giang.

Participants will learn about local life and culture, how to make traditional fish sauce, and enjoy beautiful landscapes.

Ngô Hoàng Trà My, a Vietnamese-American student, who has taken part in the camp three times, said it was a meaningful experience for overseas Vietnamese.

“During the previous camps, I always gained new useful knowledge and living skills,” she said. — VNS
