AN GIANG — Members of the border guards in southern An Giang Province have seized seven tonnes of iron scrap smuggled from Cambodia to Việt Nam.

Major Đinh Quang Điềm, head of the border guard at the Long Bình Border Gate, said the anti-smuggling team found a wooden boat full of iron scrap anchored in the Hậu River in Khánh An Commune in An Phú District at 9.45am on Monday.

Several tonnes of iron scrap were found inside the boat.

The operator of the boat, Trần Văn Luận, who lives in Quốc Thái Commune, said he was the owner of the iron scrap, which had been transported from Cambodia.

However, he failed to show legal papers that would identify the origin of the cargo. The inspection team seized the cargo.

The case is under further investigation. — VNS
