QUẢNG NINH — One person fell down a huge sinkhole when it suddenly appeared on Thursday night in Quảng Ninh Province’s Cẩm Phả City. He was rescued with minor injuries.

Tiles on the pavement in front of house No. 218 on Cao Sơn Treet started falling apart rapidly at about 7:20pm, creating a sinkhole of some 10m in diameter and three to four metres deep. It swallowed a young man and two motorbikes as well as an excavator that was brought to the scene for rescue work.

The victim was pulled out with minor scratches, but the motorbikes could not be found.

Cẩm Sơn Ward People’s Committee chairman Phạm Huy Hoàng said the sinkhole was filled in with soil and cement at 1am on Friday morning.

This is not the first time a sinkhole has appeared in Cẩm Phả City. In the past few years, several sinkholes were created in residential areas as well as in the middle of roads.

Scientists from the Institute of Geological Sciences previously concluded that the sinkholes in the area were the result of natural geological activities of the Northwest-Southeast fault. — VNS
