HCM CITY — An underpass was opened to traffic on January 31 at the Mỹ Thủy intersection in HCM City’s District 2 to help reduce congestion on routes leading to Cát Lái Port.

The two-lane tunnel, which measures 405m in length and 9m in width, has a 40km/h speed limit.

Two and three-wheel vehicles and pedestrians are banned from using the tunnel.

Lê Ngọc Hùng, director of the city’s Urban Traffic Management Zone 2, said the tunnel would help reduce traffic jams at Mỹ Thủy intersection, which is the meeting point of two streets – Nguyễn Thị Định leading to the port and Võ Chí Công.

Vehicles travelling on the HCM City-Long Thành-Dầu Giây expressway and Võ Chí Công (Ring Road No 2) can now go through the tunnel to enter the port instead of going through the intersection, he said.

Construction on the Mỹ Thủy intersection began in June 2016 with total investment of around VNĐ840 billion (US$36.8 million) for the first phase.

Besides the underpass, a flyover is also expected to open for traffic before the end of April.
