HÀ NỘI — A woman and her young daughter died in an accident on Highway No 21 in the northern province of Hà Nam, according to Bình Lục District Police.

Police said the victims were riding a motorcycle which collided with the moving train. The child fell into the river next to the track, while the mother fell on the road. Both died shortly after the collision on Sunday.

The motorcycle rider had stopped to wait for the passing train. However, due to close proximity, the two-wheeler was pulled into the running train. This is suspected to be the initial cause of the serious accident.

A local witness said several villagers immediately jumped into the river to rescue the child and took the woman to a nearby hospital. However, the woman died on the way itself due to severe injury.

Receiving the news about the serious accident, Bình Lục District Police quickly came to the scene to co-ordinate with local villagers to locate the child and investigate the cause of the incident. A few hours later, the baby was found dead.

Nguyễn Văn Tiến, chairman of Trung Luong Commune People’s Committee, where the two victims were living, confirmed the accident and said that the local authorities were co-operating with relevant officers to investigate the case.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Thái Doãn Hòa, head of Bình Lục District Police, there were many cross points between the road and the track without any barriers. Poor local budget and a shortage of manpower prevented local authorities from build barriers, therefore, those passing through had to pay careful attention to avoid accidents. — VNS
