HÀ NỘI — Youth unions from three Vietnam News Agency's units - Việt Nam News, Vietnamplus and the News Department for Foreign Service - made a trip to Lào Cai Province in the northwest on Monday to provide support to Ngãi Thầu Semi-boarding Ethnic School.

The school is located on a hill in Bát Xát District's A Lù Commune, one of the communities which were hit hardest by Typhoon Yagi earlier this month. A typhoon-triggered landslide on September 9 buried four houses and claimed seven lives in the community.

Among the victims were student Sùng Thị Lỳ and her entire family. The school was not spared, as a portion of its dining hall was destroyed.

Principal Tạ Duy Tình issued a plea for help to repair the school's damaged facilities and re-supply his affected students with food and books. And the Vietnam News Agency's Youth unions have responded to his call.

The three units delivered a relief shipment to the school, consisting of 300kg of rice, 50 cartons of bottled water, 50 cartons of sausages, 300 sets of clothing, 1,600 notebooks and 600 pens and donated VNĐ30 million (US$1,220) to help pay for repairs for the damaged dining hall.

These donations were made possible through the support of employees from the three Vietnam News Agency's units and two businesses, BAF Vietnam Agriculture JSC and A An Food JSC. Giao Hàng Tiết Kiệm JSC provided free shipping for the goods.

Principal Tình expressed deep gratitude for the aid, saying that the school is always worried during rainy seasons due to its landslide-prone location.

He hopes it can be relocated to a safer place soon so his students can focus on their studies without the constant fear of natural disasters.

"With a single wish," Tình said "I would hope to see A Lù be free from the constant threat of landslides that put my students at risk." — VNS
