ĐỒNG NAI A fatality attributed to dengue fever was reported on April 16 in Vĩnh Cửu District of southern Đồng Nai Province, as stated by the provincial Centre for Disease Control.

This marks the first dengue-related death in the province this year. The deceased was a 15-year-old residing in Vĩnh An Town.

Initially, on April 5, the individual experienced a severe fever and sought treatment from family members, managing symptoms at home.

Subsequently, three days later, the patient underwent examination and was admitted to Children's Hospital 1 in HCM City for observation, diagnosed clinically with dengue fever.

By April 10, the patient's condition deteriorated to unconsciousness, necessitating dialysis and specialised medical attention.

Regrettably, on April 15, the individual succumbed to severe dengue shock, multi-organ damage, and gastrointestinal bleeding.

Doctors determined the case as a diagnosis of dengue hemorrhagic fever, characterised by rapid progression, shock, and multi-organ damage.

Immediately following the recorded fatality, the Vĩnh Cửu District Medical Centre launched an investigation into the patient's epidemiological history and the surrounding environmental conditions, both indoors and outdoors.

The findings revealed a dengue fever case reported near the patient's residence approximately two weeks prior.

In the vicinity of the patient's dwelling, numerous water-retaining objects were identified, such as stagnant water in steam fans, flower vases, and crevices of iron doors.

Although the incidence of dengue fever cases in the district has not displayed a notable increase, the hot and sunny climate in Đồng Nai Province persists, prompting a lax attitude towards maintaining cleanliness in water containers—a conducive environment for larvae and mosquito proliferation.

In response to the situation, the provincial Centre for Disease Control has directed the Vĩnh Cửu Health Centre and the Vĩnh An clinic to actively monitor the dengue fever situation within the locality, prioritising prevention of its spread to neighbouring areas.

Additionally, authorities are mandated to intensify public awareness campaigns on dengue fever prevention and control measures. Special emphasis is placed on educating the community about eradicating mosquito larvae breeding grounds, maintaining regular cleaning of water containers, and ensuring the availability of necessary chemicals, sprayers, and medical supplies for swift response in the event of an outbreak.
