Northwestern localities’ disaster adaptation to be improved

HÀ NỘI — Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc has emphasised the need to implement an agricultural development project to adapt to natural disasters in six northwestern provinces.

He held a working session on the idea in Hà Nội yesterday with representatives of the targeted northwestern localities, comprising of Lào Cai, Hà Giang, Yên Bái, Điện Biên, Lai Châu and Sơn La.

With a total investment of VNĐ2.9 trillion (US$129.4 million), it aims to develop small-scale infrastructure facilities in rural areas in order to raise productivity and agricultural sustainability, while contributing to comprehensive rural development in the region.

The project looks to agricultural infrastructure investment towards sustainability and resistance, contributing to the adaptation of climate change and mitigation of adverse possible impacts caused by natural disasters in rural areas of the six mountainous ethic minority provinces.

Focusing on irrigation, river and dyke management, and transport, the project will benefit about 420,000 local households who will get access to agricultural production suppliers and markets as well as increasing productivity and creating high values suited with mountainous areas.

It has been developed following the suggestion of the Japan International Co-operation Agency, which helped with technical issues in a number of Vietnamese provinces.

At the working session, PM Phúc said the northwestern provinces still face a range of difficulties such as high poverty rates and huge consequences of natural disasters.

He said the project implementation aims to create practical impacts on constructing and developing rural areas.

He asked relevant ministries and agencies to closely coordinate with the localities to ensure efficiency.

The finance ministry has been urged to continue negotiating with partners to have the most optimal interests of the project’s capital.

The Lào Cai Province People’s Committee has been assigned as the coordinator of the large-scale project. — VNS
